We set off mid-morning to start our trip to the Adirondacks. Luckily we are only just over an hour from the US border at Alexandria, so not too far before we are on US soil. The line up at the crossing wasn’t too bad, so we only had to wait about half an hour before we got our turn at the gate. As we are British citizens, we have to complete a visa waiver form when we enter the US. Fortunately, there weren’t too many people there, so we were soon on our way.
Drove down the I81 to Watertown, NY then basically turned east and followed one road all the way to our destination. The one thing we did notice is that a lot of the houses on the route were very small and rundown which we don’t normally see. The scenery was very nice though.
As we passed Tupper Lake, it seemed a pretty place to stretch our legs. It is a large lake and it had a nice walkway around it which we strolled down for half an hour or so.
We then carried on driving to the hotel we would be staying in. It is the Best Western Mountain Lake Inn at Saranac Lake. The location looked very nice, in a small town with, guess what, a lake which was opposite our hotel. There was also a small lake/large pond next to the hotel.
I checked in at the front desk and the guy was very friendly. We parked round the back of the hotel closer to our room and then took all our stuff up (2nd floor) and chilled for an hour. You can read a full review of this hotel here.
After unpacking and resting for a bit we decided to drive to Lake Placid and wander round and have something to eat. It was only a ten-minute drive to Lake Placid and we managed to find plenty of parking, which was also very cheap.
The town which was much smaller than we thought, but very pleasant. We wanted somewhere to eat, but many of the restaurants were very expensive and served “posh” food which we really didn’t want. We ended up at a place called the Black Bear Diner which was an Italian restaurant but served a variety of reasonably priced meals. We were seated at the back of the restaurant so had a lovely view of the lake.
I chose cheese ravioli and Chris had fish and chips. Both meals were lovely.
After our meal, we had a drive around and found some back roads that we hoped to see some wildlife, which we did: 3 deer and a fox.
After getting back to the hotel we found the internet was extremely slow and we even had trouble just accessing our emails. Will speak to reception tomorrow if no better. Also, need to ask for cups for the room.
