This year we attended our second Calgary Pride Parade, but the difference this year was that we had media passes. This meant that we were able to walk the parade itself and get much better access to everything.
Last year we were only spectators, so we had limited views and had to stay in the same place and watch the parade go by. This year we were part of the parade itself and we were able to walk with it and interact with the people so much more. It was great fun.
The parade itself started at 11 am, but we got to the holding area an hour or so before so that we could wander around and meet some of the people.
Just before 11 am, everyone started to assemble at the starting point and the cops got on their motorcycles to lead the parade out. I thought these two guys were rather cute. One has a shirt saying He’s mine and the other I’m his.
Once the parade got underway we wandered up and down and managed to get some really great photos between us. Chris took some really great ones featured in the next slideshows.
The crowds were amazing and I tried to get some photos that summed up everyones enjoyment of the event.
Of course, there were also some protesters, but they were pretty much ignored by everyone and I did notice a perfect banner to counter the negative.
Some more general photos.
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley also took part in the parade, as did Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.
After the parade, everyone walked over to Prince’s Island Park for the Party in the Park. Lots of food vendors, sale booths and music. Also speeches by Notley and Nenshi, which were actually pretty good!
It was a really brilliant day and the weather was perfect.
